Add Alias to 365 Distribution list

The web admin interface for 365 prevents you from creating email aliases with special characters, such as the ampersand sign, but you may override this limitation by using PowerShell.

The PowerShell command below is for an array of aliases. Separate with commas to create multiple aliases via the single command:

Set-DistributionGroup -Identity “distgoupname@example.com” -EmailAddresses @{Add=“new&alias@example.com”}

Be aware there is a 64-character limit on email addresses. Also, there are other limits on spaces and hyphens and special words, but you can Google that if you are unsure.

Keep in mind that when you use a special character like ampersand you may face challenges like needing to encode it when using programmatically so use sparingly.
