Fix this Acrobat 8.0 Standard issue quickly:
You are on a webpage or have a document open and you go to print it to PDF and the familiar PDF creator window pops up with a meter showing the progress creating the PDF document. When it reaches 70% it stops and won’t print the PDF all the way. It says “Creating Adobe PDF” but under Progress it says Stopped.
First thing you do is check the log file: C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Adobe\Acrobat\Distiller 8\messages.log
This was my error from that file:
Adobe PostScript software version: 3016.102
%%[ PostScript error ]%%
Acrobat Distiller 8.3
Started: Thursday, July 14, 2011 at 15:35:14
Things I tried:
- Repaired the Acrobat 8.0 Standard program, but that did not work
- Uninstalled, rebooted, then reinstalled Acrobat 8.0 from the original disc, but that did not work
- ***Noted that the problem seemed to be with the PDF creator (distiller) program, so I opened up the hidden folder: C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Adobe\Acrobat\Distiller 8\Cache and noticed that in that hidden folder there was a hidden file called PSHFList1 which was last modified on 7/8/2011 which was just before my first error in messages.log
I changed that folder to cache.old and ended Acrotray.exe and closed Acrobat. Then I printed to PDF a word document and it worked!!
(The cache folder was recreated in place as unhidden with all files inside unhidden.) - Don’t forget to update your Acrobat to the lastest version if you reinstall the base version 8.0
I first updated from 8.1 – 8.17 using the downloads on this list here: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/498/cpsid_49880.html
After those were applied I let the computer sit overnight and in the morning it prompted to update again automatically and that update brought it current to version 8.3.1

C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Adobe\Acrobat\Distiller 8\Cache
Thanks! Solved my problem!
Just deleted that file & fixed my problem. Thank you.
Worked like a charm. Many thanks.
I had a very similar scenario today where I was no longer able to print to PDF’s successfully. I fixed this by going into Settings > Control Panel > Printers and Faxes. At this point, the Adobe PDF printer showed 12 documents still in queue. I right clicked and cancelled them all. This left one still showing, so I cancelled again and it went away. Was able to print to PDF again after that.
