MS Outlook 2007 crashing print jobs

A client today brought me an interesting issue where their print jobs were getting stuck in the queue when trying to print from Outlook 2007 and also from AMS (an Insurance agent software suite).  Usually I blame printing problems on AMS because it has always had trouble mapping remote printers via its Citrix connection.  But in this case it appears it was Outlook causing the issue.

Here’s one App log error you may see:
Faulting application outlook.exe, version 12.0.6514.5000, stamp 4a89dc70, faulting module outlook.exe, version 12.0.6514.5000, stamp 4a89dc70, debug? 0, fault address 0x00333d6f.

Others on the internet noticed that their problem started after installing the MS Update KB972363 so I uninstalled it.  When it completed uninstalling, the computer installed KB969907 automatically. I only noticed because I looked in the Application log. Strange.

Anyway, while I was at it, I removed the original Microsoft Messenger program from the computer because this client uses the Live Messenger (no need for two right?). I used the command line: RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
There are other ways to remove the messenger…go here to learn more.
This is probably why they had this Event ID in their App log:
The description for Event ID ( 7 ) in Source ( WindowsLiveMessenger ) cannot be found.

A reboot later and telling Windows not to reinstall KB972363 via the advanced options and it looks good. Printing fine from both applications and no errors yet…

PS. Here is a note from Symantec on KB972363’s effects on your PSTs…
