One of my blogs recently has alot of attention paid it by Topsy.com backlinks, so I wanted to check them out and see if they’re useful to approve.
Their website says:
Topsy is a realtime search engine powered by the Social Web. Unlike traditional web search engines, Topsy indexes and ranks search results based upon the most influential conversations millions of people are having every day about each specific term, topic, page or domain queried.
This “search engine” is interesting because it attempts to measure what they call “influence” or basically, what’s hot right now and where people are going to get the news on this topic. This is very significant for social media and news media because the stuff people pay attention to changes so quickly on the internet. Oftentimes, it can be difficult to find the most relevant website in the sea of SEO’d out webpages that we all have to deal with these days. In fact, it’s abuses of SEO which have led to such things as the new blekko.com search engine which adds a human touch to your search results in some distinct categories. If all your website has is SEO keywords, you may find your traffic dropping soon, and rightly so. I would say Topsy also adds a human touch through social network trends, which are as close to human as you can get while still being able to query a massive database in realtime. Therein lies the real value of Twitter, which they have yet to capitalize upon. But I digress.
Basically, if you receive one of Topsy’s trackbacks then someone tweeted your post/page and you’re safe to approve the link.
