Posted by Mitch in Network Admin on October 31, 2006
On every cold startup, computer displays: “Invalid Boot.ini file Booting from C:\WINDOWS\” and then, after a reset from that point, it will boot to Windows XP Pro. 10/31/06 – Cause unknown. Followed directions at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/289022 to edit the Boot.ini file and set everything to the default configuration as described in that document. Did complete shutdown [...]
Paychex Internet File Transfer password not working
Contacted Paychex at 714-438-4000 and spoke to Chris Lee in tech support x3069. <<Tech Support Queue is x3055>> They reset the password and I saved it on the computer. Client was concerned because there was a “date received” showing for one company and not for another. I speculate that the one with no date was [...]

Posted by Mitch in Internet, Network Admin on October 27, 2006
There are lots of causes of slow internet access, but in this case it was a DNS problem. The company had changed ISPs at some point in the past and still had old DNS server info on the servers which became a problem after the old ISP took down their name server. 10/27/06 – 5:20pm [...]

Posted by Mitch in Hardware, Network Admin on October 18, 2006
Older Shuttle PCs (especially ones using the “G” Chassis) have faulty power supplies. A high number of these have crapped out on me since I began working with them in June. They are only a couple years old and shouldn’t be having these problems yet, but what can you do… Replacement PS for the ShuttleX [...]

Posted by Mitch in Network Admin on October 3, 2006
Server froze during operation. Troubleshooting with HP determined the problem was either RAM or a bad SCSI Controller. They sent replacements for both and after installation of both items the server is working fine.
